The Mexican international has been a success in the Eredivisie. Fabrizio Romano revealed recently that the Blues attempted to transfer him to Stamford Bridge late in the summer transfer window.
Romano again stated that Chelsea still have Alvarez as a target in his CaughtOffside column. However, it appears they are still not sure who their priority position will be. Ajax seem determined to keep Alvarez in January. This means that Alvarez will need to wait until next season, or CFC may have to consider other options if they decide to sign a new midfielder this winter. Romano stated that Alvarez has been on Chelsea’s wish list for a long time, but Ajax will keep him at the least until the end.
“There are not negotiations currently, and also no decision by Chelsea in October on a new midfielder; it will take time. It’s not an easy decision, for sure.”
Chelsea needs to strengthen their midfield as they are currently facing a difficult situation in this area. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante will be out of contract at season’s end.
Kante, who is getting older and more injury-prone, makes it logical for Chelsea to look at Alvarez as a long term replacement.
The 24-year old looks great as a defensive midfielder and has occasionally been used as a centre back, so Graham Potter could consider him a valuable option.
