Manchester United are reportedly still in the running for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
Players swap deal between Barca and Atletico Madrid
The Spanish international’s future had been potentially linked with Barcelona as part of a swap deal to bring Antoine Griezmann back to the Wanda Metropolitano.
But according to Spanish newspaper As, discussions between Barcelona and Atletico failed to progress, meaning Saul is now back on the transfer market.
Due to the epidemic, Griezmann previously agreed to take a pay cut and reached an agreement with Barca that the club would pay back the full salary owed to him before leaving the club. But Barca do not want to do that now and Griezmann has made it clear that he does not accept being owed a salary, so the deal has broken down.
Saul Niguez had an underwhelming performance last season
Saul signed a super-long nine-year contract with Atletico Madrid in 2017, which expires in 2026. Last season, Saul made 41 appearances for Atletico, but played only 2,673 minutes and was no longer the team’s absolute starter. 2 goals and 1 assist was not even a passing grade for a player of his caliber, so he was considered a player to be dropped by manager Simeone.
The newspaper lists Manchester United and Liverpool as potential buyers, and Saul’s agent is currently working to establish links with the Premier League club.
United have been in touch with Saul in recent weeks, with Solskjaer also trying to sign him and Kieran Trippier. However, after signing Sancho for £73 million, their priority at the moment seems to be central defenders, with Varane being Solskjaer’s top target! The Red Devils may also want to strengthen their midfield, after all the current partnership of Fred and McTominay in midfield may not be enough for United to win the Premier League!
