Eriksen was nearly killed in Euros, making him one of the most sought-after athletes in world sport in 2021. However, the Danish international will still be facing a difficult road ahead when he enters 2022.

After suffering cardiac arrest in the Europa League, Eriksen was fitted an ICD (implantable cardio defibrillator). However, it is against Italian regulations that professional footballers cannot use such devices during competitive matches.
Intel announced in October 2021 that they were looking to sell the midfielder to allow him to continue playing professional football. In December, the club confirmed that they had released him from his contract.
Inter Milan stated: “Inter FC confirms that a mutual agreement has been reached to end Christian Eriksen’s contract.” Christian and his entire Blue and Black family are happy for him.
“Inter and Christian will now be going their separate ways but the bond between them will not be broken. Those great times, those goals, and those victories, as well as the Serie A title, shared with San Siro fans, will all be part of the Blue and Blacks’ history.
Eriksen cannot play in Italy. It is therefore unlikely that he will join another Serie A team. However, there are still opportunities for Eriksen to be a part of Europe’s top leagues.
Martin Schulthess, his agent, has also said no to a move in Major League Soccer, the Australian Super League, or the Chinese Super League. He cited “family reasons”.
Schultes stated in a Sky Sports interview in December that it was too early to speculate about Christian’s future because of the Italian special rules. The only thing we know for certain is that Eriksen will not live in Italy. It won’t be on another continent, either. This is because of family reasons.
“We were contacted by several clubs just a few weeks back. We’ll have to wait and see what the future brings. It seems bright, and that is what is most important.”
Rumors
Rumors abound that Eriksen may return to Ajax, his former club, where he also has a player who has had previous heart problems in the form of Bryde.
Eriksen could return to England as well, but he would need to prove that he is completely safe. He is being considered for signing by Leicester City, West Ham, Newcastle, and West Ham. A return to Tottenham could also be possible, where he will be reunited with Conte, who was the one who brought him to Inter.
Although it seems unlikely, Eriksen could return to Denmark, particularly if Ajax and Premier League clubs offer him a contract. His old club OB has offered to support him in training to keep his form.
Future options
Eriksen may be keen to continue playing, but doctors could advise him to retire.
